India have suffered an injury setback ahead of the second T20I against New Zealand, with wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan ruled out of the match due to a low-grade strain in his right adductor. The Indian team management will monitor his recovery as the visitors prepare for the next match of the five-game series.
Kishan sustained the injury during India’s four-wicket victory in the opening T20I in Christchurch on Thursday. His absence leaves India without one of their wicketkeeper-batter options for Saturday’s encounter, where the visitors will look to extend their 1-0 lead.
India have added wicketkeeper-batter Kumar Kushagra to the squad as cover for the second T20I. Kushagra, who was in Christchurch with the India A squad, is set to join the senior team ahead of the match. However, no specific timeline has been announced for Kishan’s return.
Kishan had a limited contribution in the opening game, scoring one run after coming in at No. 5 during India’s chase of 226. Nevertheless, his injury creates a selection question for the team management as it considers the best combination for the second match.
Young batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi could come into contention for a place in the playing XI, while India will also assess their wicketkeeping and batting options. The final decision will depend on the team management’s plans and the available players.
India began the series with an impressive chase after New Zealand posted 225 for 4, their highest T20I total against India. Glenn Phillips remained unbeaten on 82 off 40 balls, while Finn Allen contributed 45 from 24 deliveries to give the hosts a formidable total.
Sanju Samson led India’s response with an explosive 67 off 33 balls, helping establish a strong foundation alongside Abhishek Sharma. After India lost momentum in the middle overs, Shreyas Iyer scored 42, while Axar Patel contributed 24 and Naman Dhir remained unbeaten on 42 to guide the visitors to victory with two balls remaining.
The result gave India an early advantage in the series, but Kishan’s absence presents an additional challenge as they prepare for the next contest. New Zealand, meanwhile, will be eager to bounce back after coming close to defending their imposing total.
The second T20I will be played in Christchurch on October 24, with India aiming to strengthen their position in the series. Attention will also be on Kishan’s recovery as the team awaits further updates on his fitness.
