West Indies have recalled allrounder Romario Shepherd to their ODI squad for the upcoming three-match home series against Pakistan, while fast bowler Alzarri Joseph continues to be rested as part of workload management.
Shepherd, who last featured in ODIs in December 2024, had missed recent series against England and Ireland earlier this year. His return comes at a crucial time for West Indies, who are looking to bounce back after a 3-0 ODI series defeat to England.
West Indies, currently ranked tenth in ODIs, are in desperate need of points as they aim for direct qualification to the 2027 ODI World Cup. Head coach Daren Sammy acknowledged the challenge ahead, saying:
“Pakistan presents a different test and challenge as we continue our push for automatic qualification for the 2027 World Cup. The upcoming matches against teams like Pakistan, who are ranked higher, provide crucial opportunities to earn valuable ranking points to improve our standing.”
With Joseph unavailable, 23-year-old left-arm seamer Jediah Blades has been included in the squad. Blades has played one ODI and four T20Is so far and is known for his ability to swing the new ball. The rest of the squad remains largely unchanged.
Despite losing the T20I series 2-1 to Pakistan recently, West Indies have a solid ODI record at home, having won their last three series. All three ODIs will be played at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad on August 8, 10, and 12.
