Former Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan has announced his retirement from international cricket till March 2025.
Awami League leader and member of assembly and all-rounder cricketer Shakib-ul-Hasan is accused of killing an employee of a garment factory in Dhaka during August. Shakib is one of the 155 people named in the case, which was registered on August 22 at Dhaka’s Adabor police station on the complaint of the victim’s father.
37-year-old Shakib-ul-Hasan has not returned to his country since the end of Hasina Wajid’s government as a result of these protests. Shakib Al Hasan has expressed his desire to play against South Africa, but in the current political situation in Bangladesh, nothing can be said definitively about his return home.
Speaking to the media before the second Test against India in Kanpur, he said, ‘I have informed the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the Selectors Board about my decision, who agreed with me. I’m trying to organize things so that I can go back to Bangladesh and play 2 Test matches in Mirpur and finish my Test career there; if it doesn’t happen, it might be my last event.’
Head of Bangladesh Cricket Board Operations Shehryar Nafees says that Shakib-ul-Hasan will not face any problems while playing the home series. He further said that there is a clear message from the government that no one will be harassed unfairly.
It should be noted that the South African team is visiting Bangladesh in October for a series of 2 Test matches. The first test will start from October 21 and the second from October 29. On the other hand, the South African team is evaluating whether Bangladesh is safe for matches after the change of government last month.
Shakib Al Hasan has already announced his T20 career after the World Cup in June. Shakib-ul-Hasan said that he will play his last 50-over matches in the Champions Trophy in Pakistan in February. Shakib Al Hasan will play 8 ODIs before retirement, and the Champions Trophy will be his previous series.
