India batter Shreyas Iyer is still under treatment and observation at a Sydney hospital after suffering a laceration to his spleen during the third ODI against Australia. According to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), he remains stable but continues to be monitored in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
“Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation,” the BCCI said in a statement. “Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI medical team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian team doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress.”
The injury occurred when Shreyas ran backward from point to complete a catch that dismissed Alex Carey. He immediately clutched his rib cage and called for medical assistance before being taken off the field. He did not return for the rest of the innings.
Following the match, the BCCI confirmed that he had been taken to the hospital for further tests. There is still no confirmed timeline for his discharge or return to cricket.
A member of the Indian medical team has stayed back in Sydney with Shreyas, while the rest of the ODI players have returned home. Members of the T20I squad have reached Canberra, where India began training for the upcoming series.
India won the third ODI by nine wickets but lost the three-match series 2-1 after defeats in Perth and Adelaide.
The five-match T20I series begins on October 29 in Canberra, followed by games in Melbourne and Hobart. Shreyas is not part of the T20I squad. India’s next ODI assignment will be against South Africa, starting November 30 in Ranchi.
