Axar Patel, having been a key figure for India in the past, is stepping into an even bigger role as the T20I vice-captain. At 31, he has proven himself as a match-winner and is seen as an important part of India’s future. With a home World Cup just a year away, Axar’s leadership duties come at a crucial time as the team undergoes another period of transition.
However, Axar is not overthinking the changes or the added responsibility. He remains focused on making the most of the opportunities he gets, whether in T20s, ODIs, or Tests. “I don’t want to prove anything to anyone,” he stated ahead of India’s T20I series against England. “I focus on how I can improve my game and contribute when I get the chance.”
Regarding his vice-captaincy, Axar acknowledged the additional responsibility but approached it with calmness. He expressed confidence in the settled nature of India’s T20 team, emphasizing his role in providing input during key moments and supporting his teammates, particularly Suryakumar Yadav.
Axar also reflected on his omission from the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy squad, stating that he doesn’t let selection issues affect him. He chooses to focus on how he can contribute, whether playing or not, and understands that team combinations often dictate selections. “I think about how I can contribute, whether I’m in the team or not,” he added.
Looking ahead, Axar shares the team’s focus on flexibility in the batting order, an approach that has brought success in recent series. India aims to maintain momentum from their South Africa series and adapt in the lead-up to the 2024 World Cup.
“The target is to perform well in the opportunities we get,” Axar said, stressing the importance of trying out new strategies before the World Cup. India’s approach will continue to be flexible, allowing batters to shift positions based on match situations, which Axar believes is crucial in the fast-paced T20 format.
The first T20I between India and England will be played on January 22 at Eden Gardens.
