Former England batter Jonathan Trott has joined Ireland’s men’s team as a short-term consultant ahead of their five-match ODI series against Afghanistan next month. The appointment comes as Trott continues to be linked with England’s vacant Test head coach position following Brendon McCullum’s departure.
Trott, who scored 13 international centuries during his England career, will spend 14 days with the Irish setup. His consultancy will cover the opening two ODIs of the Afghanistan series, which begins on August 5, as Ireland fine-tune their preparations for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier.
Ireland’s Performance Director, Graeme West, said Trott’s recent experience with Afghanistan makes him an ideal addition to the coaching group.
“The upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan is crucial for our preparations for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier in early 2027,” West said. “This is a rare opportunity to bring a world-class coach into the environment who has extensive knowledge of the opposition. Having previously worked with the Afghanistan team, Jonathan can provide valuable strategic insights while helping our players and coaches broaden their understanding of 50-over cricket.”
Ireland recently appointed Gary Wilson as head coach after Heinrich Malan stepped down. West believes Trott’s international coaching experience will also benefit the newly assembled coaching staff.
“Jonathan’s contribution goes beyond working with the players,” West added. “His leadership experience at the highest level will help our coaching group by sharing his philosophy, his methods of managing elite international players, and his overall approach to leading a successful team.”
Trott’s arrival follows Ireland’s historic 2-0 T20I series sweep over India in Belfast, their first-ever series victory against the Men in Blue.
Meanwhile, Trott remains one of the leading candidates for England’s Test head coach role. According to reports from the Daily Mail, the former England batter is among a nine-man shortlist being considered by the ECB, with former England coach Andy Flower also featuring prominently in the race.
