Rishabh Pant has officially been appointed as the captain of Lucknow Super Giants for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. Pant, who previously led Delhi Capitals, entered the auction ahead of IPL’s 18th season and became the most expensive player in IPL history, with the Super Giants acquiring him for a record-breaking INR 27 Crore.
At a press conference held at RPSG House in Kolkata, Pant expressed his gratitude to team owner Sanjiv Goenka and the management, promising to give his best for the team. “I will give my 200% and work hard to repay the trust shown in me,” he said, expressing excitement about this new chapter.
Pant’s inclusion came after a fierce bidding war. He entered the auction with a base price of INR 2 Crore, and after intense competition with Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad, the Super Giants secured him for INR 27 Crore, utilizing the Right to Match (RTM) rule.
Pant’s appointment as captain follows the departure of KL Rahul. The Super Giants are building a fresh squad with a strong Indian pace attack and notable overseas players like Aiden Markram, Mitchell Marsh, and David Miller. Pant highlighted the team’s mix of youth and experience and emphasized the importance of backing players and fostering a “never-die attitude.”
Head coach Justin Langer and mentor Zaheer Khan will collaborate with Pant to lead the team. Zaheer, reminiscing about Pant’s early days with Delhi Daredevils, praised his growth and fearless approach to the game. Team owner Sanjiv Goenka expressed optimism about the Super Giants’ future, drawing inspiration from successful IPL franchises like Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings.
The Super Giants aim to play fearless cricket and earn fan support through their performances, with hopes of becoming a leading team in the IPL in the coming years.
