The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is reportedly planning significant changes to its cricket setup, with former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed expected to join the national selection committee. According to media reports, there is a strong possibility that Sarfaraz will be appointed as the new chief selector, though no official announcement has been made yet. A formal statement is anticipated in the coming days.
Sarfaraz, 37, last represented Pakistan in a Test match in 2023 and has had an illustrious career across all formats. He famously led Pakistan to victory in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy. After briefly taking on a mentorship role—now discontinued—PCB officials believe Sarfaraz’s close ties with the current players and his deep understanding of team dynamics position him well to select balanced squads and identify upcoming talent.
This potential move comes as part of a broader revamp within the PCB, aimed at building a modern cricketing structure focused on player management, tactical innovation, and long-term development. The board is also reshaping its coaching setup as part of this transformation.
In a separate development, former Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq is being considered for the role of head coach of the Test team. Misbah, who previously served as both head coach and chief selector between 2019 and 2021, is expected to bring stability and experience to Pakistan’s red-ball cricket, which the board is keen to strengthen.
Reports have also surfaced suggesting that vice-captain Saud Shakeel is likely to take over as Test captain, replacing Shan Masood. Saud’s consistent performances and leadership potential have made him a strong contender for the role.
Additionally, the PCB has already confirmed some appointments: New Zealand’s Mike Hesson has been named white-ball head coach, while former pacer Aqib Javed is set to lead the high-performance program for the national side.
These changes highlight PCB’s ambition to rebuild Pakistan cricket with a modern outlook and a strong support system for both established and emerging players.
