Former captain of the national team and all-rounder Shahid Afridi attributed the Pakistani team’s poor performance to the cricket board.
In an interview with a local TV channel, former captain Shahid Afridi said that the successive changes in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) affect the team, and a system should be given at least three years.
The former cricketer said that a new chairman comes to the Pakistan Cricket Board every year, and then a new system is introduced; things only work like that here.
Shahid Afridi said that all the senior board members and players should sit at a table and make a plan about what they can expect by creating a new system every year.
Pakistan were eliminated from the group stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 after losing their opening two matches, which also included an upset defeat by the USA.
It was the first time in T20 World Cup history that Pakistan failed to advance beyond the first round, with many fans and former cricket stars blaming captain Babar Azam for the team’s poor performance and calling for his resignation.
After exiting the group stage of the World Cup, the board made several changes. The selectors Wahab Riaz and Abdul Razzaq were dismissed, while Babar Azam’s future as captain is being considered.
On the other hand, the board changes are as follows: Ramiz Raja served as chairman in 2022 before being replaced by Najam Sethi later that year, with Zaka Ashraf taking over from Sethi in mid-2023. Mohsin Naqvi replaced him only in February 2024. After just one series, Shaheen Afridi was sacked as captain, and Babar Azam was again given the command of the team.
