Sri Lanka won the third and final match of the Test series played at the Oval by eight wickets, defeating England in a Test match after 10 years.
On the fourth day of the Oval Test, Sri Lanka chased down the target of 219 runs for the loss of 2 wickets. Opener Patham Niskana played a brilliant and unbeaten match-winning innings of 127 runs. Angelo Mathews remained not out on 32 runs.
In the third match, despite taking a lead of 62 runs in the first innings against Sri Lanka, England failed to give a big target to the visiting team and in the second innings, the entire team was bundled out for 156 runs.
Sri Lanka last beat England in 2014 and have lost 9 of the 10 Tests since then, drawing one.
England could not win this match, but its captain scored the seventh century of his career, a record that no cricketer could make in the 147-year history of cricket.
It should be noted that by winning the first two Test matches of the three-Test series between England and Sri Lanka, they have taken an unbeaten lead in the series.
The said series is also a part of the ICC Test Championship 2024-25 and Sri Lanka won the last match and secured the fifth position in the ranking table. England is ranked sixth. India and Australia are ranked first and second respectively.
