Indian board secretary Jay Shah has been elected unopposed as the president of cricket’s global governing body, the International Cricket Council (ICC). This election is likely to further strengthen India’s already-existing monopoly on cricket.
Jay Shah will take over the post in December this year from the current chairman, Greg Barclay, who decided not to take up the post of chairman for the third time.
He expressed happiness about this appointment. Jay Shah said he is committed to working closely with the ICC team and member countries to promote the game globally further.
The youngest chairman in the ICC’s history said that our aim is to make cricket more inclusive and popular than ever before.
The appointment of Jai Shah, the 35-year-old son of Amit Shah, the home minister and considered right wing of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to the post shows India’s dominance over the sport.
In 2019, Jay Shah became the secretary of the world’s most powerful cricket board, the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
According to a 2018 ICC report, the sport, which earns billions of rupees in profit, earns more than 90% of its earnings from fans in the subcontinent.
The ICC is the world governing body of the game, with more than 100 member countries. It is responsible for organizing global events such as the World Cup.
Jay Shah said that he wants to embrace new thinking and innovation to promote the love of the cricket game worldwide.
