England have suffered another injury setback ahead of the second Test against New Zealand at The Oval, with fast bowler Ollie Robinson ruled out due to soreness in his right knee.
The injury comes shortly after Robinson’s return to the Test side following a two-year absence. The 32-year-old impressed in the series opener, claiming seven wickets, including three wickets in his first over of the match.
His latest setback raises fresh concerns about his fitness record. Robinson’s previous Test appearance came in Ranchi in February 2024, where he bowled only 13 overs and did not take part in the second innings.
Injuries have regularly interrupted his international career, and his return at Lord’s appeared to be an important step toward re-establishing himself in England’s Test plans.
England have confirmed that Robinson will remain with the squad and hopes to return for the third Test at Trent Bridge, which begins on June 25.
His absence creates another selection headache for England. Captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson are already unavailable, forcing the team to make several changes ahead of the second Test.
Jofra Archer has emerged as a strong candidate for selection after rejoining the squad following his IPL commitments. The fast bowler trained with the team at The Oval over the weekend and could make his long-awaited Test return.
England are also monitoring wicketkeeper Jamie Smith, who may miss the match as he awaits the birth of his second child.
New Zealand have their own adjustment to make after Kane Williamson announced his retirement from international cricket. Will Young has joined the squad as Williamson’s replacement ahead of the second Test.
